The Clay Studio

The Clay Studio has functioned as an independent ceramic studio for 23 years. What started out as the ceramic department of the M.H. de Young Museum Art School has become one of the best equipped pottery studios in San Francisco. Our space is spacious, comfortable and conveniently accessible by public transportation. It is located 2 blocks south of the Center for the Arts, MOMA and Moscone Center and a half block from Caltrain Station .As an educational institution our primary goal is to provide a place for exploring creativity through clay and the ceramic process whether that be pottery on the wheel or sculpture. Classes are held in a supportive atmosphere and taught by knowledgeable teachers. During open studio time students from all the classes share space and experience and learn from each other. The Clay Studio also continues to foster development of the arts by offering studio space to artists. Within our structure there are 15 individual work spaces where professionals make and promote their art. An artist community is created through the sharing of techniques and ideas.

The Clay Studio offers beginning and continuing ceramic classes every 8 weeks and community studio access on an ongoing monthly basis.

Sharon Art Studio

Our Mission

The arts celebrate our differences, yet offer people of all ages and backgrounds a way to share experiences and insights. Through the arts we explore the meaning of our lives as individuals and as members of our communities. By offering everyone access to art education and appreciation, we build our sense of community.

A Community Center for the Arts

The Sharon Art Studio is a program of the San Francisco Recreation and Park Department that is enhanced by the work of the Friends of the Sharon Art Studio, a non-profit organization. The Sharon Art Studio provides a broad range of affordable arts and crafts classes for children, youth, adults and seniors. The program offers four yearly sessions and enrolls approximately 1,000 youth and 2,500 adults annually.

When you ask people around the Sharon Art Studio what they like so much about the studio, you invariably hear answers such as “I come to get away from my busy life,” “It’s my weekly therapy session,” and “This is where my social life is.” The multi-generational and multi-cultural make-up of the studio community offers students a rich and supportive environment that fosters long-term friendships. Our love for the arts brings us together and makes us reach out to all San Franciscans who would like to explore their artistic side. Every semester a new group of kids and adults begins the journey into the world of art at the Sharon Art Studio.

Weekly Classes

In each session, the Studio offers 40-50 adult and 20 youth classes that meet weekly for 4-10 weeks. Classes meet for 1-3 hours and instruction focuses on a specific medium.

Workshops

Adult and youth workshops are offered each session. Workshops are shorter in length than classes and most often meet on weekends.

Free Teen Classes

Each Fall, Winter, and Spring session, free after-school drawing, stained glass, fused glass, and ceramics classes are offered for high school students (ages 15-17).

Art In The Park

Since its inception in 1993, Art In The Park has been an art enrichment summer program for youth ages 11-15. Four sessions of instruction are offered in a wide variety of artistic disciplines. There is a special registration in the spring for this program.

Kid’s ‘n’ Clay

Since 1988, Kids ‘N’ Clay Pottery Studio has provided an ideal environment for children to explore their creativity while learning the craft of ceramics.

Kids ‘N’ Clay was founded by artist Kevin Nierman. Kids ‘N’ Clay’s Berkeley (CA) location – and the company headquarters – are located the first floor studio of a historic, landmarked Victorian in the heart of Berkeley’s artists’ community.

Nationally recognized for its innovative programs, Kids ‘N’ Clay offers affordable ongoing weekly classes for kids 3 to 18 years of age. Students are assured of personal attention and as much assistance with their hand-built project or time on a potters’ wheel as they desire!

What they’re saying:

“I love going to Kids ‘N’ Clay. I like working with clay and showing my mom the great pots I make.” Hillary, age 7

“There are two things I look forward to all week: pottery on Saturdays and Grandma’s on Sundays … for bagels.” Eliza, age 12

“Mom, this was the best day of my whole life!” Bowen, age 8 (after his first day of summer camp)

“The Kids ‘N’ Clay instructors treat the children with such respect. They relate beautifully to each age group and find projects that fit every child and the level that they’re at!” Lynn, Rachel’s Mom

“As a developmental and clinical psychologist, I know the importance that the creative process plays in a child’s full and well-rounded development. The social skills gained, problem solving techniques learned and just the sheer pleasure of having fun are what makes a program such as that offered at Kids ‘N’ Clay an important part in a child’s ability to reach their full potential. I’m so impressed with the philosophy of the program, and the way that individual differences are recognized and celebrated. It’s an amazing program!” Laura Mason, PhD, Lily & Rachel’s Mom, Clinical Psychologist, UC-Berkeley

Berkeley Adult School

The Berkeley Potters Guild, founded in 1971, is northern California’s oldest and largest collective of professional ceramic artists. Our renovated warehouse accommodates nineteen private studios.

Most members are production potters who create a wide variety of functional items. Others create one-of-a-kind sculptural pieces. Some work in traditional colors and forms influenced by an Asian aesthetic, while a few of our members make playful forms and decorate with intricate and colorful hand painted designs. The work reflects the broad spectrum of California contemporary ceramics.
Our work is shown in museums and galleries world wide, including The Smithsonian, the Asian Art Museum in San Francisco, the Oakland Museum, The Los Angeles Museum of Art, The Museum of History of Moscow, Nieman Marcus and Fumiki of San Francisco.

Our Gallery is open from
12:00 to 5:00 p.m. on Saturdays from February through November.
The Berkeley Potters Guild Gift Gallery provides an opportunity for the public to see and purchase members’ work throughout the year.
Displays change frequently as members present their most current work.

Pottery Workshops

La Meridiana organizes residential Ceramic Courses and
Pottery Workshops of one or two weeks since 1981. They are thought for beginners, advanced and professional potters.
The topics treated are various and refer to all the ceramic processes: hand building, throwing, trimming, decorating, study and application of glazes and the various firing techniques (majolica, raku, high temperature, salt & soda, wood, etc).

The Ceramic School is set in a restored 15th century farmhouse, in the centre of Tuscany, land of Etruscan and Roman culture, medieval architecture and renaissance splendour. Our goal is to offer a facility dedicated to a continual education in the ceramic art, a meeting ground in a place rich in Italian culture.

Medalta International Artists

nvited guest artists work side by side with participants in an environment that supports all aspects of the creative process. This is an opportunity to share studio space, experience, thoughts and ideas while working essentially independently. It may be a time to review past work, establish new directions, enhance a portfolio or reinvest energy through uninterrupted time. Each ceramic artist who attends takes away from the experience a better understanding of the legacy of clay that the Medalta Potteries and Hycroft China have given us.
