Material Substitutions
Due to the ever changing state of ceramics it is always essential to test replacement materials with each glaze to confirm that it works with your glaze. Below is a non-exhaustive list of raw materials and Frits.
- EPK (Edgars Plastic Kaolin) – Recommend replacement is McNamee Kaolin. #6Tile kaolin may also work. Both replacements appear to be a 1:1 substitute.
- Gerstley Borate (Gerstley) – Recommended replacement is Gerstley borate blend. replacement is a 1:1 substitute. Gillespie borate can also be subbed in, however Gillespie borate tends to be more foamy.
- Custer Feldspar (Custer) -Recommended replacement is Mahavir Feldspar. G200-EU may also be a subtitle replacement. Both appear to be a 1:1 substitute
- Kona F-4 (F-4) – Recommended replacement is Minspar with a 1:1 ratio.
Zirconium Silicate, Zircon, Zircosil, Zircopax, Zircopax Plus, Superpax – Replace with Ultrox. Replacement is a 1:1 ratio.
Flint- Replaced with Silica 1:1 ratio.
Potash Feldspar is a generic name for a potassium rich feldspar. if a glaze calls for potash replace it with Mahavir.
Soda Feldspar is a generic name for a Sodium rich feldspar. If a glaze calls for Soda Spar or sodium feldspar replace it with Minspar.
Albany Slip- Material has been Replaced with Albay Slip Sub.
